Trail Overview

Silver Cloud Mine is a short but scenic four-wheel-drive route located off US Highway 550 south of Red Mountain Pass, offering offroaders a brief but rewarding climb to a historic mining site. Starting near Mill Creek at an elevation of approximately 10,500 feet, this 1.16-mile trail climbs steadily up the mountainside, gaining about 947 feet in elevation before topping out at 11,434 feet. The initial section of the route is relatively easy, leading to a wide clearing at an old mine site. Beyond this point, the trail becomes significantly more demanding, transitioning into a narrower path with loose climbs, sharp switchbacks, and technical challenges that require careful wheel placement and a capable vehicle. With a technical rating of 5, drivers should expect uneven, rutted dirt surfaces with loose rocks, erosion, and potential water crossings up to 18 inches deep. The upper switchbacks feature steep, loose grades and obstacles up to 2 feet in height, including ledges that will test your vehicle's traction and articulation. High-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and built SUVs are well-suited for this route, while stock vehicles may struggle on the upper obstacles. At the trail's end near the Silver Cloud Mine, there is limited turnaround space suitable for only a few vehicles at a time, making it essential to travel in small groups. The route is typically accessible from late spring to early autumn, depending on snowpack, and offers stunning high-altitude views of the surrounding San Juan Mountains.
