Trail Overview

Sheephorn Mountain is a scenic 15-mile off-road trail suited for stock, high-clearance SUVs, offering a blend of moderate shelf road driving and gentle dirt paths with historic farm ruins. The route starts on varied terrain as it climbs toward Sheephorn Mountain, winding through dense pine forests and providing occasional panoramic glimpses of the valley below. While much of the trail is relatively easy, a narrow shelf road section presents a moderate challenge that requires careful tire placement and steady driving. Reaching a maximum elevation of 10,462 feet, the trail features a descent of over 3,380 feet down to its minimum elevation of 7,106 feet. The final portion of the route transitions into a relaxed drive passing old agricultural structures and homestead remains. Unlicensed ATVs and UTVs are permitted on most of the surrounding backroads, making this a versatile destination for multi-vehicle groups. Multiple dispersed camping options and connecting forest service roads exist in the surrounding area for those looking to extend their journey.

Water filled holes, some mud, ruts, rocks on the downhill west side. Challenging descent. Bear scat on the road. Wildflowers popping.

Lots of mud holes, up to six inches deep which were passable but some were a little gnarly. A few washouts on half of the trail making for an uneven and technical ride in some spots. If drier it would have been much easier, however, this was definitely NOT an “easy” trail today.

Only like 3 muddy spots, dry otherwise. Downed tree on a switchback sticks into road but was able to get around.

Lots of mud puddles, some pretty big, there were some rocky sections of road and some very narrow sections. The key for me was the climb and the super narrow shelf sections. We drove it mostly clear but occasional rain and hail.

We were cruising until and Aspen blocked the route. We didn't have our chainsaw with to clear the way so we wandered around other roads for a bit and headed back out.
