Trail Overview
Ptarmigan Pass is a scenic, 11-mile off-road route near Red Cliff, Colorado, that is perfect for intermediate drivers seeking stunning high-alpine vistas and a moderate driving challenge. Rising from a starting elevation of 9,044 feet up to a peak of 11,751 feet, this trail delivers nearly 2,700 feet of elevation gain through diverse mountain terrain. Offroaders often tackle this trail in a clockwise direction combined with McAllister Pass, starting near Shrine Pass. The journey begins with a memorable half-mile trek directly through Wearyman Creek, where water levels can rise significantly depending on the season, so caution is advised during early summer. Much of the route is nestled within dense forests, offering a secluded mountain experience before opening up to sweeping meadows and gorgeous vistas near the mountain pass summit.
Rated a 4 out of 10 for technical difficulty, the trail features a primary surface of dirt and loose rock with a few minor rock ledges that require careful line choice. The northern segment of the pass is noticeably tighter, steeper, and rockier than the graded road found on the southern portion. High-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs are highly recommended to safely conquer these obstacles and the watery creek bed. To maximize the experience, drivers can take the scenic spur trail to the summit of Resolution Mountain for breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding peaks. Due to its high elevation, the trail is seasonal and typically remains closed or snow-packed until late June or early July, making late summer and early autumn the prime time to visit.

This high-altitude route is seasonal, typically opening in late June or early July once the winter snow has melted, and closing with the first major autumn snowfall. Vehicles must be highway-legal or properly registered off-highway vehicles. Be prepared for high water levels in Wearyman Creek during the early summer runoff.
