Trail Overview
Trail 647 is a rocky and steep climb up a wide path through the Gunnison National Forest, near Pitkin, Colorado. The west end of the trail starts off of FS 763 Wuanita Pass Road, southwest of the town of Pitkin. The west entrance is unmarked, and the trail looks like it’s been rerouted to not be as steep, with a few split lines closed off from people short-cutting the hill climb in the past. The first half mile is very steep and rocky, constantly covered in big loose round rolling rocks, and bigger boulders. The trail has ruts and roots, and is a test of traction up the climb. It also makes several unmarked turns where having an offline map is helpful to follow the route. After .6 miles, the climb mellows out, and it makes a left turn onto a wider and easier road that takes you to the start of ATV Trail 649. Note that the west entrance of the trail lacked any width designation signs, so you may see wider vehicles out here unintentionally.
Difficulty
This is an intermediate trail due to the half mile long climb from the west entrance that is very steep and rocky. It isn’t off-camber, but the rocks are big and loose, and it will be a good challenge for newer riders.
