Trail Overview

Pool Table Road goes to the Wheeler Geographic area, one of two places in Colorado that have Hoodoos. It is a long winding road, about 1/2 of it is annoyingly bumpy but drivable in an average stock Jeep or truck. There is a section that is heavily rutted but can be done with careful wheel placement. If it were wet, this place would be a mess. While there is not much interest on the way, you are rewarded with a volcanic geological wonder that covers just 26 acres. Parts of this road are closed in fall during Elk rifle season.

Difficulty

It begins as a county road that any vehicle could do. However as it becomes a FS road, there are rocky sections and some decent hills with a few shallow water crossing. There is one section with very deep ruts that can be bypassed, or you can straddle the ruts.

Trail is mostly snow packed tracks with a few muddy spots. We made it to the Hanson's Mill campground with highway psi. Might could have gone further if we would have aird down but we were by ourselves in one Jeep and didn't want to risk it.

Easy-ish trail (4ish hours from pavement) but there are 3 large mud pits once you get to the top. Went up with no rain for over a week, and still had to use max trax. However, coming back down, got 2in of rain and it was a whole other beast. Doppler is a black hole in that area so weather is unpredictable. 2 ft deep mud puddles in parts so bring recovery gear. Also LOTS of beetle kill, highly suggest a chainsaw. Only 1 way in so if trees go down you might need to lumberjack out. And don't be lazy and drive off trail, either bring the right stuff or don't go up. Mostly referring to TX plates towing a 20 ft flat bed trailer digging gashes in the trail, with 3 rigs stuck behind him. Really guy? That being said, Wheeler is AMAZING! There's a reason they wanted to make it a National Park. Crazy volcano energy, Bryce Canyon of CO. But there's a reason they didn't make it a NP, and that's cuz of the road. Upkeep would have been insane. So all we got is that dirt. Do it right, do it smart, help each other. Be safe.

This trail should be divided into 2 trails or roads. The first 10 miles is a well maintained gravel road that anyone can go down. The last 15 miles from the gate at Hanson Mill is a different story. High Clearance is a must and 4 wheel drive is needed when wet and desirable when dry. Technically the road is not difficult but the condition of the road dictates the difficulty. Beautiful drive through high alpine meadows and forest.
