East Willow Creek Road (NF 502) is a gateway into the historic mining district just north of Creede, Colorado. Rising from an elevation of approximately 8,600 feet to nearly 10,600 feet, this 5.3-mile trail offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and canyons while leading travelers past historic sites like the Phoenix Park Mill. The route is mostly a graded dirt and gravel road suitable for high-clearance vehicles. As you climb, you will wind along East Willow Creek, gaining approximately 1,630 feet in elevation through a beautiful canyon that showcases Colorado's rich silver mining heritage.
There are no major obstacles or technical crawling sections on this easy, rating-2 road, making it accessible to most stock SUVs and crossover vehicles. However, drivers should be prepared for some tight squeezes where the road narrows against the canyon walls, and keep in mind that cell service is highly spotty or completely unavailable throughout much of the corridor. Given the high elevation, the road is typically accessible from late spring through autumn, and visitors should remain alert to changing weather conditions that can quickly turn the dirt surface slick.
History
East Willow Creek Road travels through the historic Creede Mining District, which was one of the last great silver boomtowns in Colorado during the late 19th century. Along the route, travelers will pass the ruins of the Phoenix Park Mill and other historic mining sites that once processed silver ore extracted from the surrounding mountains.
Access Description
Located within the Rio Grande National Forest, this road has no fees or permits required for standard recreational travel. Due to elevations reaching 10,600 feet, the route is typically closed or impassable due to snow from late autumn through spring. Cell service is highly limited or unavailable along most of the route.
