Trail Overview

Pine Road - FS 264 breaks off High Rock Creek and opens immediately into a sprawling, large, and scenic dispersed campsite, setting the tone for a beautiful adventure. The route is a versatile corridor open to a wide array of users, including hikers, skiers, bicyclists, motorcyclists, side-by-sides, and standard passenger vehicles or trucks. The trail surface features an even 50/50 blend of soft, forgiving dirt and loose, shifting pebbles. Initially, you will enjoy a relaxed descent along the mountainside that offers breathtaking, wide-open views of the surrounding terrain before the trail shifts character. Transitioning into the route, the terrain becomes more technical with a series of climbs and tighter corridors. The first mile is marked by persistent 6–8 inch ruts that require some attention, followed by a refreshing small water crossing. Once you cross the water, the path climbs back up into the mountain, featuring steeper sections with 5–8 inch ruts and sustained 10–15° slopes. As you near the end of the route, the foliage closes in, making the trail noticeably narrower and increasing the likelihood of light pinstriping from encroaching brush. This path is widely recognized as a popular hunting corridor for deer and elk, and it serves as a valuable access point for additional snowmobile routes in the winter season.

Difficulty

This trail presents a moderate level 3 challenge due to the combination of depth and steepness. The consistent 6–8 inch ruts found throughout the first mile and the subsequent climb require a vehicle with reasonable clearance and careful tire placement. While the 10–15° slope sections are manageable for most high-clearance 4x4s, the tightening trail width toward the finish, combined with the potential for brush-induced pinstriping, makes this route unsuitable for full-sized campers or trailers. Drivers should be prepared for a varied, technical drive that demands constant focus on line selection.
