Trail Overview

Pearl Pass provides a wide variety of exciting riding including rolling hillsides, difficult rock ledges, and high-mountain riding with spectacular views. Part of this trail passes alongside the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness and stays very remote, so plan accordingly. Unlicensed vehicles are allowed at the start of Trail #738 but must turn around at the pass. Trail is closed March 1 to May 27 depending on snow.

Difficulty

Difficult. Many boulder fields, steep climbs, water crossings and narrow shelf roads. These conditions are magnified by snow and ice that are present well into late summer at higherelevations. During years of heavy snowpack, the summit can be blocked for the entire year. Trail is not recommended for stock SUVs.

History

Few people know that mountain biking started in Crested Butte back in 1976, when a group of half-crazy bicyclists decided to ridetheir heavy, balloon-tired Schwinn bikes over Pearl Pass. Now there is an annual event in September called the Pearl Pass Tour. In one day, bikers ride from the town of Crested Butte to Aspen, a total of 38 miles. In 2009, the event was held on September 12. The date changes a bit each year, so you might want to find out the exact date before heading out.

Approached from the Crested Butte side. Snow across trail just before Pearl Pass was too deep. Turned around near Carbonate Hill.

Entered from the Aspen side, got to about 11,300 feet, just passed Tagert Hut and the trail was blocked by snow.

End of May coming from Aspen we were able to get to the fork but couldn’t go past the hut on the left to complete the full pass. The shorter (out and back) option to the right has a sign that reads “sharp rocks” so we didn’t want to push our luck since it looked like some weather was coming in. But there were beautiful mountain views and several waterfall crossings even just up to that point! Hope to do the full pass from Aspen to Crested Butte one day!

Trail was open and clean. No obstruction and no snow on the Crested Butte side. Aspen side looked impassable due to snow covering the trail at the peak.

Very rough with wet sections and large boulders. Some portions of shelf can be very narrow (a good spotter is essential). Trail ran with a Gladiator on 40” tires, stock Ram Rebel on 35s, Bronco Badlands Sasquatch, and my Tacoma. This is an EXTREMELY long and challenging trail. The 3.5 hrs on its listing is absolutely wrong. It took us 7hrs.

The aspen side has one main challenging obstacle, pretty steep rock step that had water flowing on it after some heavy rain. Almost turned us around but we got up with some mild cab damage. Was snowing at the summit and seems like it got dumped on the night after we went over.

Only had difficulty on spot in photograph. Don't know best line to drive it. Went thru pass in rain and hail. Puddles and crossings no deeper than 18 inches with lots of traction. No actually sticky mud bogs

Aspen to Crested Butte. Glacial moraine. Very rocky. Watch your sidewalls on sharp rocks. A few very shallow stream crossings, and a partially dried up mud bog. Beautiful views! Free range cows on Crested Butte side. Beautiful camp spots. It made me smile to wake up to mooing.

Drove Aspen to CB. Aspen side was good, one snow crossing on the way up, had to take a couple runs at it. About 100 yards from the top, there is a snow patch pushing you off trail on a steep slope. Have to go off camber and let rear slide down slope at punch it to get back in trail. Not ideal, got through, not for the faint of heart. Patch probably clear in a week and it’s a clean drive. CB side all good. Running a JT with 40’s.
