Trail Overview
Munition Road is a highly scenic, moderately technical 1.6-mile trail situated directly off the main highway, serving as a vital, connective artery to numerous other prominent trails in the surrounding network. As you embark on this journey, the trail immediately points you toward a majestic, looming mountain range, offering continuous, breathtaking panoramic views of the wide-open, sun-drenched landscape. Early in the drive, travelers will encounter clear warning signage before tackling a series of light off-camber sections—measuring around 10 degrees—paired with a rugged, mixed-rock surface. As you venture deeper, the trail's character transforms, becoming significantly more aggressive and technical. You will face formidable, deep ruts reaching anywhere from 12 to 14 inches, making engaged four-wheel drive an absolute necessity for safe, controlled travel. Around the 1-mile mark, a sprawling, highly accessible dispersed campsite provides a fantastic, spacious spot to rest and take in the expansive vistas. The path itself is composed of a challenging mix of loose dirt, embedded rock, and thick clay. Crucially, this heavy clay content becomes exceptionally slick and treacherous when wet, meaning conditions deteriorate rapidly after rainfall, making the route entirely unsafe for travel.

This moderately technical route demands respect and properly equipped vehicles due to increasingly aggressive obstacles. While the initial stretches feature only mild 10-degree off-camber slopes and mixed rock, the terrain quickly escalates to feature severe, 12- to 14-inch deep ruts that mandate high clearance and engaged four-wheel drive. Additionally, the heavy clay surface composition transforms into an incredibly slick, unmanageable hazard during or after any rainfall, making dry-weather travel strictly necessary for safe passage.
