Trail Overview
Munition Hill is a highly scenic, 1.2-mile open trail that invites a wide variety of explorers, from horseback riders and hikers to drivers of side-by-sides, motorcycles, and all street-legal vehicles. The journey begins with an exciting, steep rocky descent characterized by moderate ruts ranging from 4 to 8 inches in depth. At approximately the 0.2-mile mark, the terrain dramatically transitions into a very soft, powdery sandy surface that significantly affects vehicle traction. As you navigate the wide, expansive terrain, you are treated to magnificent, close-up views of dramatic surrounding cliffs and towering mountain formations. The remarkably open landscape supports fantastic dispersed camping throughout the corridor; while you won't find formal campsites with established fire rings, there are numerous flat, perfectly usable areas ideal for a tranquil overnight stay under the stars. Keep your eyes peeled, as graceful wildlife such as sheep and deer are incredibly common in this rugged region. Due to the loose rock and incredibly soft sand, travel on this route is strictly not recommended during or immediately after any rainfall. Additionally, please heed a critical safety notice: this historic area may contain dangerous remnants of unexploded munitions. Never touch any unidentified objects, and report any suspicious findings to the local sheriff’s office immediately.

Under completely dry conditions, this trail is highly accessible for most street-legal vehicles and off-road enthusiasts. However, drivers must carefully navigate an initial steep, rocky descent featuring uneven ruts between 4 and 8 inches deep. Furthermore, the abrupt transition into incredibly soft, deep sand significantly reduces traction and requires steady vehicle momentum. Due to these specific surface compositions, traversing this route during or immediately after rainfall is highly discouraged, as the wet sand and slick, loose rocks will quickly escalate the difficulty and create treacherous driving conditions.
