Trail Overview

Metberry Gulch (Forest Service Road 205) is a scenic, 9-mile out-and-back trail consisting of mixed rocky and dry soil terrain. It's a popular local offroad destination and is one of the three trails in the area known as "The Gulches" along with Longwater Gulch and Hackett Gulch. As you pass the gates at the beginning of the trail, you will be welcomed with views of the surrounding mountains as you traverse through the site of the Hayman Wildfire, which took place in 2002. At the time, this was the largest wildfire in Colorado's history. There are two major obstacles along the trail, a rocky V-notch and Chicken Scratch Hill. The rocky V-notch requires careful tire placement, as there is a risk of tipping over due to steep off-camber. Further down the trail is Chicken Scratch Hill, a steep rock slab that requires traction as gravel and dry soil can make the tires slip. The rest of the trail consists of moderate incline and off-camber terrain. As you witness nature slowly rebuilding its forest, you may find several species of birds, a herd or two of deer, and tiny Colorado chipmunks. The trail ends at a small loop by the South Platte River with plenty of space for dispersed camping, although there are no available toilets on the trail. Depending on the time of year and especially after a wind storm, expect to see some downed dead trees across the trail. Be prepared to remove some obstacles using gloves, winches, and/or a chainsaw.

Chicken Scratch hill is no joke if it’s raining. Same with the notch. You will slide if it’s wet. You’ll probably slide if it’s dry. Otherwise trail is easy. Road is rutted in places but overall soft Platte kitty litter that makes for a smooth ride. Beautiful colors. Fall is really showing off up here right now. Side note on your trek to the gulch; they must have just graded cedar MTN road it was a rally track. We hit 40 mph on sections.

Not sure why this is rated a moderate I thought it was quite easy! I ran this with bald tires and no lockers in a leaf sprung wrangler that has almost no flex and my beater did not struggle at all. This trail has all the views and some awesome camp spots! Bring a tent and a fishing pole if you want to make a day out of this trail.

Trail seems worse since is first did it a few years ago. Lots of washed out spots. Spent a lot of time off camber. I would say this is a high moderate or low difficult.

Trail was sloppy in spots, but I didn’t have traction issues anywhere. Due to the recent warm weather there wasn’t any significant ice, snow coverage in some less exposed areas, slushy snow and water, of course, from the melting snow. It wasn’t so sloppy that I felt like I was at a mud bog and I never had to “send it” to get through anything. Some of the various ascents that didn’t have the best exposure were covered in a slushy mix and the steeper ones I did use lockers to try and ensure no wheel spin, but I was able to crawl up them with a little momentum without any problem whatsoever. I was aired down to 10psi.

Trail was mostly snow covered. Ice in spots. Very slick in spots but was passable. Didn’t need any winching.

Nobody else but us at that time, I did this trail a year ago when I was bone stock in my 98 Tacoma with a broken leaf spring, super bald tires and a couple other things alone and did great so pretty much just get out there and go, just don’t be stupid

Fun solo trip. Not recommended to do solo, wasn’t expecting some of the steep obstacles. I’d stay I found a safe limit for my jeep w/ 3 and half in lift. Going down the trail is fine coming back was difficult.

The 6 rating is only due to the V notch obstacle which does have a by pass. There are two named obstacles on this trail. V notch and chicken scratch hill which is a giant rock that you drive down. Other than that this trail is easy. Probably the easiest of the three gulches. Huge camping spot at the bottom
