Trail Overview

This is a scenic out and back trail about 1.5 hours from Colorado Springs and is one of the three trails known as The Gulches. It is located in the old Hayman Fire burn area which gives plenty of mountain views. The Forest Service District has the trail currently ending at the Park County line. Most of the trail is smooth gravel with dips and humps that test suspension flex and travel. It only contains a couple of obstacles that give it the difficult rating including a steep off-camber drop to continue the trail.

A fun loop through the gulches as always. Unfortunately, side by sides have torn up the trail significantly since last year :/

This trail is amazing and not as challenging as expected. One rock feature makes it difficult with the ice though. End of trail has a river crossing.

Trail was a mix of dry and a sloppy wet slushy snow mix. As mentioned in the description, waypoint 7 is what gives the trail it’s difficulty rating, the rest of the trail isn’t bad and the main obstacles were dry. For waypoint 7 I chose a more center line, descent and ascent. For the descent I stayed right on the trail then turned in to take a center line down the rock. Walked down in 4Lo in first gear. The rear slid by just the slightest amount, but kept the wheels turning and was fine. Took the same line on the ascent, lockers engaged this time, crawled up in first gear. I personally would not attempt this obstacle in anything but dry conditions. Once turned around at the county line, the ascent back to waypoint 6 after ascending the rock obstacle required some momentum as it was covered in snow. Turn your traction control off. I was aired down to 10psi.

1-2ft deep snow and ice on the hills approaching the boulder obstacle. Rubicon on 40s made it down the boulder and winched back up. heavy winching to get back up the hill.
