Trail Overview

Matukat Road is a well-maintained gravel road connecting CO 77 to US 285 via Stoney Pass on the Eastern edge of the Lost Creek Wilderness and Tarryall Mountains. The vast majority of the road passes through the unrecovered 2002 Hayman fire leaving an almost lunar landscape throughout. It is no longer a forest and more of a grassland.

Difficulty

This is a wide small, loose gravel road suitable for any vehicle.

History

The 2002 Hayman fire began with arson by a USFS employee was the largest wildfire in Colorado history in 2002, but it has since been surpassed. This is largely a ponderosa pine forest and because of the unique nature of ponderosa pines, it is never expected to recover to be a forest.

This was an easy ride from south to north. Some washboarding in places till you get to the Goose Creek campground, then it was smooth the remainder of the trail. No surprises and excellent views to the east. The trail rating was spot on, and this trail can be done in a stock vehicle.

Road was in good condition even when wet. Ample campsites along the way both prepared and dispersed.

A great easy day, no reason to air down or anything technical on the trail. Great views of the Heyman burn area.

Really scenic and fun trail! Offers many camp spots and yellow pull off trails that offer some great wheeling. Although the trail is easy for a lifted 4x4, the classification as a 1/10 is not accurate. If you take a regular car on this trail, you will destroy your oil pan and front bumper. There’s even a 16in water crossing from a flood section at the end! Beyond that, rain has deteriorated much of the trail, so watch for run off and random potholes. Great trail and highly recommend as an alternative to the highway in that area!

Absolutely beautiful ride. Very windy today but otherwise great ride. 2 BMW 1200gs 1 with 50/50 tires, the other with 85/15 tires, and a klr with 50/50s.

Was great, 2 spots with snow/ice on them, about 1000 feet total, not deep and very passable.

Dry and dusty conditions. More users on this section of trail. Careful around blind corners, as I was almost hit 2-3 times by vehicles cutting corners. Remember to ride right!

Snow, ice, muddy on portions of the trail that are less exposed. Dry and a little dusty on the exposed portions. No trouble with anything. Used 4x4 is some spots just as a safety measure and to not tear up the trail.
