Trail Overview

Wigwam Trail is an ideal destination for novice offroaders, dispersed campers, and hikers looking to access the rugged Lost Creek Wilderness. Spanning approximately 1.3 miles through the scenic Pike National Forest near Cheesman Reservoir, this easy dirt route begins off Stony Pass Road (Forest Service Road 545) and heads west to terminate at the Wigwam Creek Trailhead. Offering a mild elevation profile with a gentle net loss of around 73 feet from a starting elevation of 8,274 feet, the trail is typically passable by most high-clearance passenger vehicles and stock four-wheel-drive vehicles in dry conditions. The single-lane road winding through dense pine stands and open meadows provides several turnouts to allow passing and easily accommodates SxSs, dirt bikes, and overland rigs. Camping enthusiasts will find numerous established dispersed campsites tucked along the route, offering tranquil spots to pitch a tent or park a trailer under the forest canopy. While the primary surface is well-graded dirt, visitors should remain cautious during wet weather when low-lying sections can accumulate up to six inches of standing water and turn muddy. The trail ends at the boundary of the Lost Creek Wilderness where motorized vehicles are strictly prohibited, transitioning into the popular Wigwam Creek hiking trail. For those planning a multi-sport adventure, this short route serves as the perfect staging area to park four-wheel-drive vehicles or SxSs before heading on foot into the wilderness for backpacking, fishing, or scenic day hikes.

Trail was easy to travel. Had a good bit of camping spots to choose from. Only complaints was the amount of used toilet paper around the sites and constant traffic through the night.
