Difficulty

Moderate. Road starts easy but gradually gets steeper with more embedded rock. Most high-clearance, 4-wheel-drive SUVs can manage this route, but careful tire placement may be needed, depending on clearance.

History

Loch' is the Scottish word for 'Lake.' We are assuming Colorado's Loch Lomond is named after the more famous Loch Lomond in Scotland. Scotland's Loch Lomond is much larger, measuring 24 miles in length and 600 feet deep. It is a popular national park and recreation area close to Glasgow. Both Colorado and Scotland lakes share a natural beauty against a backdrop of towering mountains.

Great trail! Be aware that the second gate is closed for the season. We hiked up to the lake — from the gate, it’s about 2.9 miles round trip with roughly 391 feet of elevation gain. Highly recommend!

We tackled the Loch Lomond Trail in an EarthRoamer LTx and SX, and despite the stormy, rainy weather—it turned out to be one of our favorite trail days yet. The drive starts off mild, winding through dense forest before opening up to incredible alpine views. As the rain rolled in, the trail got slicker, adding a fun bit of challenge and making the whole experience feel like a real adventure. The EarthRoamer handled it effortlessly—steady on the climbs, composed through puddles, and unstoppable in the downpour. By the time we reached the lake, the clouds were low, mist hung over the peaks, and everything felt peaceful and surreal. It’s one of those trails that rewards you no matter the conditions—sunny or stormy, it’s absolutely worth the trip. If you’re in Idaho Springs and looking for a moderate off-road trail with a great mix of terrain and a stunning alpine lake payoff, Loch Lomond should be high on your list. A good slow 5 mph drive up and back on average. Every driver was respectable utilizing the passing sections. Get to the top! It’s well worth the effort and the view is stunning. Hopefully going to camp it next year.

Busy but not too crazy, wildflowers are blooming, beautiful drive up, nothing sketchy if you’ve got decent clearance.

The trail is passable with a crossover or wagon but higher clearance vehicles are preferable. There are a few sections where lower clearance cars are prone to scrapping. If you have a car with less then 10in of clearance consider parking and hiking or be ready to be very careful on a few sections

Open. Even with the crowded opening weekend, still felt secluded on the lake. We got a Subaru Outback up there during Friday's storm, but took a few second tries and careful lines on two sections. The rest is mostly just slow rocky crawls. Water crossings were all less than a foot deep, even with the storm.
