Trail Overview

A lot of people choose to spend a weekend playing around this area. There are a lot of different trails to try out as well as some interesting historical sites. The trail connects to Red Elephant Hill and Mill Creek Loop. ATVs and UTVs will especially enjoy this trail. There is a staging area at the trailhead. Open all year.

Difficulty

Difficult. Upper part has several steep, loose, rocky sections. Some stock, high-clearance SUVs can do it, but at least one locker is highly recommended. Use F.S. 183.1A bypass around worst section if your vehicle does not have differential lockers.

History

The town of North Empire, located 1 mile north of Empire, housed many of the men working in the highly productive Conqueror Mine. During the 1860s and '~70s the town had several boarding houses and a small cable-operated railroad. Even with the railroad, most of the travel was still done by horse and wagon. Only traces of North Empire remain today.

Made it all the way to the lake, snow is about 1 mile from lake. But you can make it all the way to the lake.

I drove up the trail for about 4 miles. This my first time doing this trail and it was more difficult than I expected. My stock hight Cayenne with 31 inch tires did fine. I had to ask for someone to spot a couple of times but for the most part it was fine. Very rocky for the most part and some obstacles that had to be negotiated very carefully.

2 foot snow drifts every 20 feet towards the top of the mountain. The upper 10-20% of the trail has too much snow to see the rocks to drive on safely.

There is quite a bit of snow from the recent storm and we were only able to make it about a quarter mile from the lake. They are fairly good sized snow drifts that are still pretty hard and you can drive and winch over them.

Open trail, snow packed near the end. Plenty of turnarounds before the snow gets too deep or slick. Still passable in the snow, just have a winch or a buddy along.

Got to about the spur trail before a few attempts through snow drifts and ice stopped us. Everything else passable.

Trail was open. The steep hill at the end was icy underneath the rocks but most of the trail was dry. The chute was completely dry also. Conditions will probably worsen this week with coming storms.

The trail was mostly dry, with just a few patches of snow and ice near the lake. The lake itself is fully frozen. Overall, I’d rate the trail as moderately challenging. It was my first time doing it, but I didn’t have any issues. Spotter in helpful at some areas. Happy adventuring!

Our 4Runner is bone stock when it comes to tire size and suspension. We have added weight so we have lost some ground clearance. We are also not super experienced on technical terrain. But with proper wheel placement and a spotter you can make it up. I aired down to 17 PSIG and used 4lo the whole trail. A-trac did wonders but the rutted section at the second hairpin needed the use of a rear locker. My buddy has a lifted 5th gen and he used speed. Not too bad after this, like I said smart wheel placement and a spotter in sections can get you far here. Lake was gorgeous but frozen over. Snow, ice and mud was present on the last mile of the trail. Not bad enough to loose traction on. But enough to make you think. No body damage but my oem skis plates got a workout. I can see in some spots where body damage can easily happen though. Also I do not have rock sliders so I was extra cautious.

Wonderful trail. We encountered everything from snow, mud, and sunshine. There is a bypass for the most difficult part of the trail. I did both bypass and not in my vehicle.

This is a lovely trail with great scenery, accurately rated. There are a couple technical spots but we had no trouble in a stock jeep. There’s a very nice lake at the top of the trail and some hiking. The lake is too shallow to swim but it’s a great spot for a secluded picnic. I would strongly recommend that if you go up on this trail that you return on this trail as the connecting red elephant trail is really tough.

Trail was pretty much as described. Went up in Rubicon with 1" factory lift and 35" tires with no problem. Took about 1.5 hrs up and the same down. Found fishing at the lake and river not so good. Late morning though.
