Trail Overview
Last Chance Mine is a short spur trail ideal for history buffs and offroaders of all skill levels seeking stunning high-alpine views and a glimpse into Colorado's rich mining past. Branching off from the historic Bachelor Loop near Creede, this easy dirt route climbs to an elevation of nearly 10,500 feet, making it accessible to most high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and even stock SUVs under dry conditions. The trail features a gentle incline with an average gradient of about 5 degrees, but drivers should remain cautious as the road is narrow and lacks room for two vehicles to pass comfortably, requiring careful yielding during peak times.
Upon reaching the summit, visitors are treated to panoramic views of old mining operations scattered across the canyon below, as well as access to the historic Last Chance Mine site itself. Established in 1891 after a prospector's loose burro led him to a rich silver vein, the site now offers guided mine tours, historical cabins, and a gift shop surrounded by well-preserved vintage mining equipment. Operating primarily during the late spring through early autumn due to high-altitude snowpack, this route serves as an outstanding side trip that perfectly complements a day of exploring the Bachelor Loop.
History
The Last Chance Mine was established in 1891 when partners Ralph Granger and Eric Von Buddenbrock grubstaked a prospector named Theodore Renninger. After nearly a year of unsuccessful searching, Renninger was down to his last five dollars and planned to leave Creede on the evening train. Going up the canyon one last time, his burro slipped loose and wandered up the mountain. Upon catching up to the animal, Renninger sat on a large rock outcrop and began striking it with his hammer, accidentally discovering the apex of the silver-rich Amethyst vein. He named the claim the Last Chance Mine based on his earlier breakfast declaration that it would be his final attempt to strike it rich.
Access Description
The route is typically open from late spring through early autumn, depending on high-altitude snowpack. While there is no fee to drive the access road, fees may apply for guided mine tours or cabin rentals at the site. The road is very narrow and does not allow two vehicles to pass easily; drivers should be prepared to yield to oncoming traffic.
