Trail Overview

You can see James Peak on the western horizon on a clear day. The trail goes just above 12,000 feet, so snow arrives early and stays late. Unlicensed vehicles are permitted, and this is an enjoyable trail for them. Parking and camping are available on the north end of the trail.

Difficulty

Difficult. Very steep and rocky in several places. Northern part of trail follows a shelf road that may intimidate some drivers. We do not recommend stock vehicles although an aggressive, high-clearance SUV with low-range gears and a skilled driver can do it.

History

Today, Alice is a picturesque mountain residential community. In the 1880s, however, it was an active gold and silver mining town with its own stamp mill. The 'Glory Hole,' a large open pit mine in town, was the biggest producer. Not much remains of the original town except a restored school house at the corner of Alice Road and Silver Creek Road.

Trail is fine and gate is open. On the last stretch before Kingston Peak (above tree line) there are snow drifts pushing 3.5ft deep. It's probably still possible to make it up if you keep 2 of your wheels on the rocky areas, but I got a little stuck and decided to turn back rather than push my luck.

Coming from the southeast, deep snow starts at the left hand turn and descent towards James Peak Lake Trailhead. It continues all the way down the road and as it turns back to the right, and off into the distance. Tracks ahead of me were in a higher clearance vehicle and stopped about 30’ into the first bank of snow and looked like they reversed out to the side and retreated. We had to turn around, no way to make it thru that much snow. Coming from southeast, thru the “neighborhood”, it’s a wild ride, very rocky and bumpy with some rolling bits and steep sections, too, but never so loose that we lost traction. If you don’t mind it being an out-and-back until the Spring, still a fun trail with a nice overlook at its high point.

Trail going up to Loch Lomond was great, some mud but nothing major. View from the Loch cache is amazing. Fall colors were popping. Trail down from Loch at timberline had one snowy patch, totally passable with a stock Rubicon. Fun trail, amazing views, few people. Trail is wide enough to pass another vehicle in many areas.

Maybe not closed for everyone, but I got stuck in a snow drift between two peaks with snow coming down hard and the temperature dropping, by the time I turned around the snow was accumulating enough that it was all I could do to make back to the peak I came from.. it was pretty scetchy!

No other vehicles seen. Trail was a bit rougher than last time 2022 or so. Bumpier than I remembered but not too difficult. Didn’t scrape even once. Stock LX 470. Did lock the diff on the steep uphill section cuz it was raining and loose. Made it easier but you could run open diffs no problem.

Amazing trail. Not too far from the metro either. Ran it from Tolland to st Mary’s and the went to loch lomand. The views are incredible and the trail really isn’t that hard, just some steep sections. Trail was also damp from all the rain but definitely not muddy.
