Trail Overview
Italian Creek is an exceptional backcountry offroad route designed for intermediate drivers seeking a rugged high-altitude adventure through Colorado's scenic Elk Mountains near Taylor Park. Stretching approximately 36.8 miles, this trail offers a technical rating of 4, presenting drivers with steep climbs, loose shale, narrow shelf sections, and a handful of rocky ledges that demand a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle or a capable OHV. Starting at an elevation of 9,697 feet, the trail climbs progressively to a breathtaking peak of 12,719 feet, yielding a total elevation gain of roughly 4,795 feet. Drivers will navigate a mix of dirt, loose rock, and gravel as they wind through dense pine forests and ascend past timberline into alpine meadows, where the jagged peaks of Italian Mountain and Boston Peak dominate the skyline.
One of the absolute highlights of this route is the optional spur up American Flag Mountain, which rewards visitors with panoramic 360-degree vistas of the surrounding wilderness. The trail also links up with the remote Reno Divide, making self-sufficiency and proper trip planning essential since recovery services are far from this isolated area. Dispersed camping opportunities are abundant along the corridor, providing excellent spots to set up camp under the stars. Offroaders should plan their trip for the summer and early fall, as high-altitude snow keeps the pass closed well into spring, and local seasonal closures like Cement Creek (typically closed from March to May) require detouring via Reno Ridge Road to access Taylor River Road.
Access Description
The route is subject to seasonal closures. Cement Creek is typically closed from March to May; during this period, Reno Ridge Road should be used as a detour to access Taylor River Road. High-altitude snowpack typically keeps the trail impassable until late June or July.
