Trail Overview

Italian Creek is an exceptional backcountry offroad route designed for intermediate drivers seeking a rugged high-altitude adventure through Colorado's scenic Elk Mountains near Taylor Park. Stretching approximately 36.8 miles, this trail offers a technical rating of 4, presenting drivers with steep climbs, loose shale, narrow shelf sections, and a handful of rocky ledges that demand a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle or a capable OHV. Starting at an elevation of 9,697 feet, the trail climbs progressively to a breathtaking peak of 12,719 feet, yielding a total elevation gain of roughly 4,795 feet. Drivers will navigate a mix of dirt, loose rock, and gravel as they wind through dense pine forests and ascend past timberline into alpine meadows, where the jagged peaks of Italian Mountain and Boston Peak dominate the skyline. One of the absolute highlights of this route is the optional spur up American Flag Mountain, which rewards visitors with panoramic 360-degree vistas of the surrounding wilderness. The trail also links up with the remote Reno Divide, making self-sufficiency and proper trip planning essential since recovery services are far from this isolated area. Dispersed camping opportunities are abundant along the corridor, providing excellent spots to set up camp under the stars. Offroaders should plan their trip for the summer and early fall, as high-altitude snow keeps the pass closed well into spring, and local seasonal closures like Cement Creek (typically closed from March to May) require detouring via Reno Ridge Road to access Taylor River Road.

The green was awesome. Great cruising, having a blast breaking in the new adv bike. The red? Holy balls. That was terrible. Lifting a top heavy adv bike almost made me quit and just walk out. The rocks through the red section were ungodly. Trying to get through a 100 yard section of stream with boulders ended up on my side 5/6 times. That red section is not for the faint of heart, it was absolutely brutal. I never want to do it again.

(July 9, 2025) If Indian creek trail is rated a 4/10, then this is a 6/10. Spoke to another rider who said this is the worst he has ever seen this road in the 9 years of riding it. Big heavy exposed rock garden for the first mile, then it drops to a 4/10.

The location of the Italian Creek label on the map is American Flag Mountain not Italian Creek

The rise from Cement Creek was cake compared to the Italian Creek side. A boulder section was not passable with a stock vehicle, so we turned around.

So this trail doesn’t have any major obstacles on it but the entire thing is very rocky and rough. So not fun at all for a normal 4x4. Very slow going. I do this stuff all the time and have a YouTube channel and I’d probably never do this trail again. These kind of trails drive me insane. Like who’s having fun driving this? And not one fun obstacle either. The views were actually pretty great at the American flag pole though. Got great drone footage.

Started on 7759 and went all the way up to the flag. Saw plenty of wild life on the way up. Roads were somewhat dusty. Almost at the top we ran into some snow but easily passable but the trail was rough. On the way back down we took 7748 the start of the down once reaching the woods was passable but rough and once on the main road it was extremely dusty. But we saw more wildlife which was worth it.

Tried coming up by Spring creek, tried going left up 7744 as well as cutting through FS-880.1C. Even with snow chains and a winch, was forced to turn around due to sheer amount of snow after less than 1 mile up either from the split. Will try again when June comes around.

Trail was epic, and technically would be a 4/10 but I’d note that the areas of 18” obstacles and water are EXPENSIVE! Was much more consistently difficult than any other 4/10 we’ve been on. Miles worth of heavy rock/boulders. We have 12” of clearance which was a bare minimum for this trail, really would advise having at least 14”-16” of clearance to ride this comfortably. In my pic, where the arrow is, we followed the trail instead of the alternative trail and it was by far the toughest part of the trip.
