Trail Overview
Journey into the breathtaking high country along Green Ridge Road, an incredibly scenic 11.3-mile trail situated near Toponas, Colorado. The adventure begins as a relatively mild, well-maintained gravel and dirt road weaving through dense, vibrant aspen forests, offering some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the area. These early sections feature fantastic dispersed camping opportunities alongside minor, highly manageable 2- to 3-inch ruts. Around 1.6 miles, you will cross a prominent cattle guard—please exercise caution, as free-roaming cattle are frequently present on the trail. By the 3.4-mile mark, the terrain becomes notably more rugged, with ruts deepening to 6–10 inches. This dense forest corridor is highly prone to fallen trees; carrying a reliable chainsaw is strongly recommended to clear downed timber that can easily span 6 to 14 inches in diameter. Approaching 5 miles, the surface transitions to a noticeably rockier, bumpier ride. The true test begins after the 8-mile point, where the trail aggressively escalates into a highly technical, demanding environment. Drivers will encounter significantly deeper ruts, much steeper climbs, tight tree clearances, and formidable obstacles requiring 12 to 14 inches of vehicle approach clearance. AWD or 4WD is absolutely required for this final stretch, and full-width trucks may struggle to squeeze through the dense timber.
Difficulty
This incredibly diverse trail begins with a highly accessible Level 2 rating, featuring smooth gravel and shallow 2- to 3-inch ruts suitable for most standard vehicles. However, the difficulty aggressively ramps up past the 8-mile mark to a solid Level 4. This advanced upper section demands engaged 4WD, precise line choice, and a minimum of 12 to 14 inches of ground clearance to safely conquer steep, rocky climbs and deep, punishing ruts. Additionally, the remarkably tight tree clearances pose a significant challenge for wider trucks, and drivers must be fully prepared to clear large fallen trees using a chainsaw to ensure a successful passage.
