Trail Overview
Deadhorse Loop is a premier high-elevation route designed for offroaders seeking a scenic, moderately challenging mountain journey with stunning views and excellent camping opportunities. Spanning approximately 11.4 miles, this dirt loop begins at the Flat Tops Scenic Byway and climbs toward the base of Sand Peak, reaching a maximum elevation of 10,403 feet from a starting point of 7,892 feet. The trail is ideal for ATVs, SxSs, and high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles with good articulation, offering a total of 2,981 feet of cumulative elevation gain. While aggressive, stock four-wheel-drive SUVs can manage the route when dry, drivers must be prepared for narrow passages and some very steep ascents along the way.
Operating typically from mid-June to mid-November, the trail's difficulty can increase significantly when wet, transforming the unpaved surface into a slick challenge. Tight brush may scrape wider vehicles, making careful navigation necessary as the route weaves through the dense high-alpine vegetation. Travelers can enjoy exceptional vistas of the surrounding flat-topped wilderness before choosing to connect with Ripple Pass or other nearby trails suitable for unlicensed vehicles. To access the trailhead, offroaders can take the scenic drive from either Yampa via County Road 17 or Meeker via County Road 8, both of which lead directly to Forest Service Road 230 where the adventure begins.
History
The trail meanders near the unique Flat Tops Wilderness, which was officially designated in 1975. Millions of years ago, tectonic activity pushed up a massive, single block of rock. Subsequent volcanic activity released lava flows that filled in the deep valleys between peaks, resulting in the distinctive, relatively flat high plateau that characterizes the landscape today.
