Trail Overview
Cunningham Gulch is a great side trail just outside Silverton, CO providing an excellent area for dispersed camping, stunning views of the San Juan's, old mining camps, and waterfalls spread throughout the area. The first portion of the trail is easily passable by vehicles pulling campers or trailers allowing lots of areas to pull off and make camp. Excellent area to make a base camp if you're going to be riding ATVs / SXS throughout the Silverton region. Just before the ascent up the mountain at the old stone mill is the final turnaround area for vehicles with trailers. You can camp at the old stone mill providing excellent views and great waterfalls flowing through the camp. The pools are deep enough for a refreshing dip in the hot sun. The second portion of the trail winds up the mountain. Some areas are tight and steep and highly advised not to attempt with a trailer. Right before the hiking trailhead, you have a small stream crossing which in the springtime may exceed 12 inches of water. Once at the top there are a couple of excellent hiking trails and old mining structures to enjoy. If going on hikes please respect the sheep herds roaming the high country.
Difficulty
Steep accent up the mountain, not advisable for trailers. Once on top of the mountain to reach the final mining camp and camping areas 4wd required for multiple stream crossing (under 8in), steep climb, and tight switchbacks. One stream crossing may exceed 12in in the spring.
