Trail Overview

This route travels through a heavily forested area with dense pine trees, scattered low brush, and sections of more open terrain. The surface consists primarily of packed dirt and gravel with scattered loose rock throughout. Numerous potholes and rougher sections can make the drive slow and somewhat bumpy, although there are no major technical obstacles. Portions of the route follow an old railroad bed, with evidence of the area's mining and railroad history still visible along the way, including old mining ruins and disturbed hillsides. The road also passes near private property, so stay on the designated route and respect all property boundaries and posted signs. The surrounding forest occasionally opens to provide views of nearby hills and historic mining areas.

Difficulty

The route consists primarily of maintained packed dirt and gravel with numerous potholes and scattered loose rocks that create a slow, bumpy ride. Grades are generally mild, and there are no significant ledges, deep ruts, washouts, or technical obstacles requiring careful tire placement. Most stock high-clearance vehicles should have little difficulty completing the route under dry conditions.

History

Leadville's surrounding mountains are heavily connected to Colorado's mining history. Mining booms beginning in the 1860s transformed the area, with gold, silver, lead, zinc, molybdenum, and other minerals driving development over different periods. Many roads and routes throughout the mountains originated as access to mines, claims, settlements, and other industrial sites. Remnants of this history can still be found throughout the area, including mine workings, foundations, structures, and old transportation corridors. Leadville was also once home to the Unsinkable Molly Brown, who lived in the city during its mining boom and met and married J.J. Brown there. Doc Holliday also called Leadville home during the 1880s, spending time in the city's saloons and gambling halls during one of its most colorful periods. Leadville itself is recognized as a National Historic Landmark District.
