Trail Overview

Enjoy this section of the famous Alpine Loop, which can be combined with the Engineer Pass. Take Wager Gulch up to Carson Ghost Town, and take Cinnamon Pass Road up to American Basin for wildflowers. Staging is available on the western side across from Eureka Campground. Staging area options on the east side.

Difficulty

Moderate. Most of this trail is easy; however, the western end is steep and rocky in a few places. The side trip up Wager Gulch is more difficult. All roads, when dry, are suitable for any stock 4x4 SUV with moderate ground clearance. The side trip up American Basin is borderline difficult.

Lots of people but it was 4th of July weekend. Cinnamon pass is not difficult, and most of it is just loose uneven gravel roads. There was a small water crossing, but I'd estimate not much deeper than 8 inches. Most difficult part was just pass American Basin where you have a few switch backs getting up the mountain. Still wasn't extremely difficult, just had to be a bit more careful with tire placement.

Really great trail to get yourself used to alpine roads. Agree with 3 rating as there are some rutted, rocky and steep climbs that can be intimidating to newer drivers.

Access Description

From Ouray: Follow directions for Mineral Creek, Trail #9, then head south 1.4 miles on C.R. 2 to Cinnamon Pass on left. From Silverton: Head north on C.R. 2 for about 12 miles and turn right uphill after Animas Forks. From Lake City: Head south on Highway 149 and turn right on C.R. 30 after 2.3 miles.
