Trail Overview
This short but entertaining route branches off the Dotsero Crater Trail and reconnects approximately one mile later, offering a worthwhile challenge for drivers looking to add a bit more excitement to their day. When approached from the south, the trail begins with a steep, deeply silted climb that extends for more than a football field in length and can quickly test both traction and momentum. After reaching the top, the route turns right and follows a fence line across rolling terrain, creating a fun, roller-coaster-style drive before rejoining the main road. Due to the steep grade and deep silt, 4WD is absolutely mandatory on this route. Airing down your tires is also highly recommended and often necessary to maximize traction and complete the climb.
Difficulty
When traveling from north to south, this route remains relatively easy until reaching the southern end, where the trail transitions into an extremely steep, deeply silted climb or descent, depending on your direction of travel. This section is the defining obstacle of the route and should only be attempted by experienced off-road drivers. Successfully climbing the hill requires 4WD, properly aired-down tires, and careful momentum management to maintain traction in the loose terrain. Drivers descending the hill should proceed slowly and with extreme caution due to the steep grade and unstable surface. This rating reflects dry conditions only; the obstacle becomes significantly more difficult and potentially impassable following rain or during wet conditions.
