Trail Overview

Set across a sun-bleached high-desert badland landscape dominated by rolling clay bluffs and sparse sagebrush scrub managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), BLM 113 delivers a short yet stunning backcountry journey. Accessed directly off the primary BLM desert track network, this 0.9-mile out-and-back spur brings vehicles closer to the towering Book Cliffs than almost any other route in the region. Recreators and overland campers travel this path to experience dramatic cliffside vistas, capture wide-angle desert photography, or set up basecamp at an expansive group site. The driving surface consists of a single-lane fine dirt and loose sand track featuring washouts and longitudinal ruts, earning an accessible Grade 2 difficulty rating. Leaving the main corridor through a wire fence line, the track proceeds over soft silt with initial 4- to 6-inch ruts. As the route approaches the mountain wall, minor rain washouts widen wheel trenches to 8–10 inches. The trail terminates at an impressively large, flat campsite that comfortably accommodates up to 15 vehicles right beneath the majestic Book Cliffs. Drivers should strictly restrict travel to dry weather, as wet desert clay becomes extremely slick and soft.

Difficulty

Earning an accessible Grade 2 difficulty rating, this 0.9-mile desert spur features a forgiving single-lane track composed of powdery dirt and fine sand. Technical rock obstacles and steep inclines are absent under dry conditions, though longitudinal wheel ruts measuring 4 to 6 inches deepen to 8 to 10 inches near localized washouts. Drivers should keep tires centered along the highest ground, maintain smooth momentum across soft silt beds, and avoid traveling during or immediately after rain when saturated soil turns into severe, sticky mud.
