Trail Overview

This scenic trail consists mostly of fine dirt and begins with 6–8-inch ruts and rock obstacles, along with several rock gardens. Within the first 0.2 miles, there are two large, level campsites with fire rings, while farther in, the trail narrows as it winds through dense aspen forest. The trail eventually opens into a valley with excellent views of the surrounding red rock formations and cliffs.

This trail is rated Level 3 because of the 6–8-inch ruts, rock obstacles, and rock gardens combined with the narrow trail. While there are no major technical challenges, drivers should use caution through the uneven terrain and tight forest sections.

History

The Uncompahgre National Forest was established in 1905 and has a long history tied to mining, logging, ranching, and early settlement in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains. The region was especially shaped by the late-1800s mining boom, with historic towns, mines, and roads still found throughout the forest today.
