Trail Overview

This trail connects Big Creek Trail to Uranium Road and consists mostly of fine dirt with several rock gardens. The single-width route has 6–8-inch ruts and can become extremely difficult when wet or raining. At 0.7 miles, there is a large, level campsite that can accommodate up to eight vehicles and includes two fire rings, plenty of shade, and privacy from the trail.

Difficulty

This trail is rated Level 3 because of the 6–8-inch ruts, rock gardens, and narrow single-width route. While relatively easy overall, wet conditions can make the fine dirt significantly more challenging.

History

The Uncompahgre National Forest was established in 1905 and has a long history tied to mining, logging, ranching, and early settlement in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains. The region was especially shaped by the late-1800s mining boom, with historic towns, mines, and roads still found throughout the forest today.
