Trail Overview
Adams Lake is a premier high-altitude loop designed for experienced offroaders seeking a challenging, scenic trek across the White River Plateau. Spanning approximately 16 miles, this route climbs from a starting elevation of 10,375 feet up to a breathtaking peak of 11,077 feet, accumulating over 1,760 feet of elevation gain along the way. With a technical rating of 7, this trail features steep, rocky climbs and muddy patches that demand a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle or capable SxSs. The terrain is rugged, without major single obstacles, but the relentless rockiness and steep pitches require focused driving and aggressive tires.
As the trail winds through the subalpine environment, drivers are treated to spectacular vistas of Adams Lake, Elk Lake, and Bison Lake, while skirting near Heart Lake. Due to its high elevation, the route is typically accessible only from mid-June to mid-November, as heavy snowpack melts slowly and leaves behind wet, muddy sections well into the summer. Remote, dispersed camping is highly popular near the shores of Adams Lake, providing an excellent basecamp for exploring the wider area, including nearby Blair Mountain. Street-legal, licensed vehicles can also utilize connecting trails to travel further toward the towns of Rifle and Meeker.
Access Description
The route is open from mid-June to mid-November, depending on snowpack and local trail conditions. A high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle or a capable SxS is required to navigate the steep, rocky terrain. Dispersed camping is allowed near Adams Lake, but visitors should practice Leave No Trace principles and be prepared for remote, high-altitude conditions.
