Trail Overview

This 2.05-mile point-to-point trail climbs over 400 feet from Bald Mountain Road to Pilot Springs (FS 1S04). The sand and pumice surface is just over one vehicle wide. The trail starts in a recent forest fire area before quickly entering a healthy section of forest. At mile 0.8, you start climbing a sandy shelf road with great views of the Eastern Sierras and Bald Mountain. At mile 2.0, you enter another previous forest fire area. In the fall, you're treated to beautiful colors as the Aspen trees change. 4x4s are not required but recommended, and good tires are a must.

Difficulty

This trail features some ruts due to heavy side-by-side use, and a sandy shelf road starting at mile 0.8. Quite a few downed trees have been cut, but they are close to the edge of the trail, so use caution.

Several trees were down across the road, but they were easy to navigate around

Running out of time in the swell and head just one more day to sneak a couple trails in so we opted for this trail and black dragon wash. As described this trail is a very simple trail, but very scenic and beautiful.. although I dropped into the canyon from Sagebrush Hills spur to get to the bottom of the canyon to meet up with the trail. That is much more advanced than going into the front door. Just the word of warning for those who want to try to come in through the top.
