Shortly after the town, the well-maintained gravel road winds through dense forests of pine and spruce trees, traversing the mountain slopes. Along the way, you will pass a few private properties. The trail itself is smooth, allowing for a swift journey to Bowman Lake. Upon arrival, you are greeted by a breathtaking, serene lake, surrounded by vibrant, lush trees and majestic rocky mountains. The crystal-clear waters reflect the beauty of islands that resemble peaceful oases. This trail offers an abundance of natural beauty at every turn.

The trail is primarily composed of well-maintained gravel, making it accessible for most vehicles, including two-wheel drive cars, all the way to Bowman Lake. The majority of the route is smooth and easily navigable, with only the final few hundred yards becoming slightly more uneven. While this section may present a few bumps and ruts, it can be easily managed with careful driving or the assistance of a spotter. This is inaccurately rated as a 1. It's definitely a 3.

Perfect conditions for this trail today. Did not go over 90 at any point. Did it with no issues in a stock Ranger, FX4. Views so stunning, even if you are an atheist, you might thank God. Plenty of spots to park and take a few hits of that piney green air up there. It is also very humbling. I am scared of heights, so a few of the sections got the ol' blood pump to rev a little high, but worth every second.

Road has sections eroded away creating crevasses and potholes. Sections climbing out of Washington have heavy washboarding. Use 4wd and take it slow to prevent from making washboards worse. Conditions were very dry when we traveled and had moderate dust. Section coming into Bowman lake has softball size rocks and loose gravel. Nothing a stock to high clearance 4x4 can’t handle.

Absolutely beautiful drive into the mountains from the quaint town of Washington. I was able to make it about halfway to Bowman Lake before the snow got thick enough to cause concern, so ended up turning around. I’m not sure at this point if it’s possible to reach Bowman Lake with the snow situation, but there were a couple built rigs in front of me that certainly made more distance than I did. The best thing about this road is the scenery is absolutely spectacular and you’re immersed in trees and vistas for the entire drive. Highly recommended. Also since Bowman Lake Road is closed in the winter for snowmobiling, this is an alternate way to get to Bowman lake.
