Trail Overview

Holcomb Creek Road is a great trail for the new off-roaders in the forest near Big Bear. The trail provides plenty of dense forest scenery and some easy-to-moderate 4x4 challenges. The most notable obstacle on the trail is a rocky hill climb on the east end of the trail. This is also a connector trail that will take you from Copley Road to Holcomb Valley Road and a lot of other trips that branch off that.

Difficulty

There is really one major obstacle on this, which is a 40-degree hill climb with several moderate-sized rocks and ledges. At roughly 30 feet long, the hill climb is just big enough to get the heart pumping and for you to second guess your line of attack. This is much easier if you are coming from the west since it's now a downhill obstacle, but you still need to choose your line carefully and "tread lightly". Some people have tried to create a bypass--please don't follow that route and stick to the main trail

The trail was pretty easy, except there was one short, rocky descent in which you need a high clearance four-wheel-drive to make.

High clearance 4x4 should be able to do it. Lockers might be needed without spotters in some spots. Not for beginners.

Fun casual trail. Theres one section thats rutted but not bad. My Jeep walked over it easily. My friends 2WD only 4 runner and other friends Subaru outback also made it with some spotting and help.

Heads up: I’m not sure why this is rated 'Easy,' as there are a few rutted-out sections that are tricky for beginners. If you are new to off-roading, I’d recommend having a passenger or another vehicle to spot you. I was out there alone and had to turn back because I didn't have a spotter for the rougher patches

this was the worst spot i cam across however I managed in my lifted Outback wilderness with Toyo ATs at 20psi. Just be careful if you don't have undercarriage armor. there was also a section that was really rutted but it ran parallel to the trail.

Pretty calm trail. It had a couple off camber points but if your were careful it wasn’t a problem.

Ran this trail in a badsqatch on 35s. The rating for this trail probably needs to be updated due to erosion and deeper ruts. There are 2 obstacles that can really mess up your undercarriage if you don’t have a spotter, or take a bad line. I would not recommend running this trail on less than 35s if you don’t have skid plates. I’ve done higher difficulty rated trails without touching the skids, I scraped twice on this one. Nothing the Bronco couldn’t handle, but the were a few clenchers on this one. The road is narrow, and pin striping is possible on wider vehicles. I would not recommend taking a truck with a long wheel base. You will need a high clearance vehicle and 4low. A rear locker isn’t a must, but a nice to have for this one.

Fairly easy trail, made it up the main rocky incline with my bone stock Tacoma however had to turn back as the 2wd tundra in our group couldn’t make it up. Might be able to do it with 2wd and lockers but I’d recommend 4wd

I’m pretty new to off roading and wanted to find a nice area to camp out for my birthday. App says it was an easy trail so I figured I give it a try. Went to yellow post #34. Oh man , it was pretty nerve wrecking. Came at night. Very rocky trail with quite few sharp turns. A pretty steep hill climb with few inches of snow. Also road was kind of narrow mostly so my truck got pretty scratched up by the plants/bushes. What made it hard for me was the road had quite a few angle turn and roads where I felt like my truck was going to rollover. First time really going through a trail like this so I don’t know exactly my trucks capabilities. But we made it through safely, built a little more confidence in my truck and myself. Also there was a short hill climb with a huge rock which was scary to go over, coming back the next day, I went over it slowly and scratch up my rock sliders a little. I attempted to exit the next day continuing through the trail but that I couldn’t get up that steep hill climb.
