Trail Overview

This is a 14-mile trail along a ridgeline that dead-ends on private property. Spectacular views span from the sea to the valley. Many Big Sur hiking trails end on this road. Numerous side trails lead illegally into Fort Hunter Liggett. Do not take them! The fort is a testing ground for tanks and artillery.

Difficulty

Mostly easy but one stretch in the middle of the trail requires high clearance and 4WD.

Super chill, closer to a green. One section that briefly goes off trail is pretty sweet. Definitely some amazing views.

Went up Los Burros Road from Hwy 1 near Willow Creek to South Coast Ridge Road then north to Nacimiento Ferguson Rd and then down to Hwy 1. Road was a little rutty in spots and typical back country road bumpy but my CJ handled it without any issue. Did not come accross any obstacles that a stock jeep or any 4x4 truck couldn't handle with ease. Views were amazing and the weather was in the 60's with about a 20kt breeze. Would recomend this to anyone from beginner to seasoned wheeler. FYI, Plaskett Ridge Road is still closed by a private property owner and has been for the past 20 years or so. Would also recommend this road for the view you can get looking up the coast from some nice knolls up towards the top. You can also go down a ways from the S. Coast Road on Plasket but cannot get down to Hwy 1 due to the private owner closings.

We entered the trail from the south point. Never read any trail reports about a water crossing but there was a pretty big creek right before the entrance. After we figured out the water, we were about 5 minutes from the official trail start and there was a downed tree. We were super stoked about this trail but left pretty disappointed.

For sure pin striping, super dusty, very steep and loose dirt on the 1st off camber obstacle. Seen another GX struggle a bit going up it, seen a 4th gen taco send it and break a cv axle. Choose the right line and it’s fine. Buddy did it aired up. Scenic and beautiful trail. Like someone said, some atv dude created a make believe fire patrol group handing his flyer out came to our site. He has no authority but checking for fires. He wasn’t rude or anything.

Slightly more difficult than the “.4” section of this trail, but still very do-able for any stock 4wd vehicle. Great camping options that are not very obvious if you’re driving 20+ mph, so slow down and look closely. There was a local who patrols on an ATV looking for people with campfires, so be mindful of that possibility. Doesn’t work with forest service and has no authority, but keep it in mind if you see an ATV rolling up on your camp site.

There no clear path to getting to this trail from the east side. It takes you through an army shooting range then leads you to a path filled filled with a foot of water it looked sketchy so I took a alternative route but that leads to a bridge crossing that was closed.

The highlighter route on the map is actually 2 trails. The norther portion heading east-west is los-burros road, this road was graded by a tractor within the last 2 weeks and should be rated a 1. South coast road heading south from the fork with the northern part of south coast road would probably be a 3 or maybe a 4, there was maybe 2 spots where we had minor slippage in 2wd but never had to shift out of 2wd.
