Trail Overview

Smart Spring trail is an alternate access to the Cactus Flat OHV Staging Area. It is a short, little used, and maintained trail that drops down from Hwy 18 that has some short rocky sections that require a high clearance vehicle. This trail connects to access other nearby trails in Cactus Flats climbing up to Big Bear or dropping down towards Pioneer Flats. At over 6,000' elevation, this trail will often be snowbound in winter.

Trail was tuff for my stock 2022 trd offroad premium. This is not a green trail by any means, when we got to the bottom it's marked blue. I had to use crawl controll to slowly navigate the route, had a blast. Lots of boulders and drops

This needs to be re-rated as a Moderate trail. It’s a Blue Square on the sign post at the top. It may get more chill once it drops down into the valley, but coming down the canyon from 18 is a challenging trail. Lots of big rocks and it’s on a shelf with a steep drop on one side. For a more chill entrance, drive down 18 about a mile further and take Smarts Ranch road into the OHV area. We picked a bad line in one spot and scraped one of our frame rails on a boulder- ouch. We were able to get past it with some better driving/spotting, but plan to take this one slow!

Definitely not a green trail. Took the family Suv out instead of the Jeep/crawler, so was looking for gentle trails to cruise on. We made it through with our 2008 Sequoia on 35s, but it was not easy, and made even worse with the snow falling. I'd only recommend this for more capable stock vehicles (Rubicon, Zr2, 4runner Pro/trail, etc), or others with at least a little lift and bigger tires.

86’ Bronco II on 31s: Trail is definitely a notch above the easy rating given….Very fun on a rainy day though!

This trail has been rated level EASY, and I BEG to differ. My jeep has perfect clearance for most trails that I’ve done around the mtn. But this one specifically had me clenching! Many, many big boulders that caused us to veer to the closest side of the cliff right when you get to the hook turn. Very sketch, I would almost recommend airing down beforehand. Please proceed with caution and experienced drivers are a MUST.

instead of going to the staging area, you might be able to park here and ride your SXS from here... it's a bit confusing because if you start the trail at the staging area it will end here, although if you start here there's signs that says no green sticker vehicles.. 34.29708, -116.80086 it's easier to start from here if you find space to park your trailer.

to many rough spots to consider this a green trail, more than stock clearance recommended

Do not follow google maps to head towards staging area. We went down with a SXS on a trailer and what a mistake that was. Had to unload SXS , un hitch and recover trailer to attempt to get out. Lots of boulders.
