Trail Overview

Accessed directly off Highway 49 just outside the charming town of Downieville, Saddleback Road is a classic, highly enjoyable forest road. The journey begins with a smooth, well-packed dirt surface that offers plenty of fun, sweeping twists and turns under a beautiful canopy of tall, shading pine trees. As you meander along the hillside, you will enjoy dappled sunlight and eventually break out into sweeping, expansive views of the distant forested mountain ridges. About a mile into the drive, the road begins to pitch upward, becoming slightly steeper and introducing a noticeably more gravel-heavy surface. You will also encounter a few scattered, loose rocks that have been washed into the path from seasonal water runoff. The road is cut neatly into the hillside, occasionally featuring small dirt banks with exposed tree roots, but the main path remains wide, clear, and very inviting for a scenic afternoon cruise.

Difficulty

Earning a very mild difficulty rating of 2 out of 10, this road is highly accessible and does not require four-wheel drive to successfully conquer. The primary obstacles are occasional water-runoff rocks and shallow earthen ruts measuring no more than 6 to 8 inches deep. To comfortably navigate these sections without scraping your undercarriage, simply straddle the shallow ruts by keeping your tires securely positioned on the highest parts of the packed dirt. Maintain a smooth, steady momentum on the steeper, gravelly sections to prevent any loss of traction, and you will easily glide your way up the mountain.
