Trail Overview
Red Tail Canyon is a short, incredibly scenic 1.1-mile two-way connector trail that treats off-road explorers to a highly enjoyable canyon run. Starting directly off Rattler Trail, the route consists of a mixed-dirt path that gracefully meanders through rolling desert hills under wide, unobstructed skies. The track guides drivers past sparse, scattered desert brush and vibrant patches of seasonal purple wildflowers blanketing the valley slopes. A unique highlight of this route is a small, unmapped offshoot loop that briefly branches away before cleanly reconnecting back to the main trail. This brief transit offers a beautifully tranquil driving environment with mild terrain changes that eventually terminate at a junction with an unnamed connector trail. The run is highly versatile and can be comfortably tackled throughout the fall, winter, or spring seasons.
Difficulty
Red Tail Canyon earns a Level 2 technical rating due to its highly approachable layout and lack of demanding obstacles. The trail features mild elevation changes and slight surface unevenness, but it remains fundamentally non-technical. There are no large rock ledges, deep washouts, or intimidating off-camber situations to worry about. While a 4x4 system is recommended for optimal traction over the shifting loose dirt, a standard two-wheel-drive vehicle equipped with good all-terrain tires can easily complete this access road under dry conditions.
