Trail Overview
The Red Tail Canyon Extension is a short yet incredibly useful 1-mile, two-way connector trail that bridges multiple routes within the local off-road network. Breaking away right off the Red Canyon Trail, the route kicks off dynamically with an immediate, steep hill climb within its first 500 feet. Once drivers conquer this initial challenge, the topography settles into a mellow, pleasant mix of soft light sand and hard-packed firm dirt. The trail winds beautifully through a classic arid desert terrain characterized by wide-open skies and sparse, scattered low brush. Serving as a critical link, the path connects Red Canyon Trail to Rattler Trail and the Road Runner Trail, ultimately finishing up at Gold Hill Road. This highly functional connecting transit offers a fun, brief desert run that is best enjoyed during the mild fall, winter, or spring seasons.
Difficulty
This route earns a Level 2 technical rating primarily due to a singular punchy obstacle at the very beginning of the drive. Off-roaders will face a short but notably steep hill climb situated immediately within the first 500 feet of leaving the Red Canyon Trail. While the rest of the 1-mile track is a relaxed mix of firm earth and sand, a 4x4 or AWD system is highly recommended to cleanly ascend this early grade without spinning out. Capable stock AWD vehicles can easily handle the challenge as long as their off-road systems remain fully engaged. Additionally, because the path supports two-way traffic, drivers must use basic caution and watch for oncoming vehicles along the narrower sections.
