Trail Overview

Pickett Peak Road entrance is marked with USFS number 31053. The gradual ascent is typically one vehicle wide with places to pass on this double-track dirt trail. This first 2.5-mile portion of the trail ascends from an elevation of 7,800 feet to 8,500 feet. The trail descends and then climbs to the trail's highest point of 8,700 feet. This climb is the steepest and most technical part of the trail. This slightly steeper section of the trail winds tightly between pine trees which will present long-wheelbase vehicles (Jeep Gladiator size) a challenge. There are a couple of small seasonal stream crossings with a water depth of 6 inches or less. This double-track trail is suited for off-highway and 4WD high-clearance vehicles. It's not recommended for 2WD or 4WD cars.

Difficulty

This trail is unmaintained after rain or snow. The road is double-track and single-vehicle-width. A few tall stones and obstacles under 6 inches can be easily avoided. 90% of the trail is easy, but there is 1,500 feet of steep trail that winds tightly through the pine trees.

This is a stunningly scenic trail and overall pretty easy. Only a few short sections justify the “moderate” rating. With a few stops along the way, it took me about 70 minutes to complete. I agree with others who said it’s not ideal for full-size pickups, but my 4-door Jeep JL handled it with no issues at all.

The trail description is spot on with this one. Most of this trail is a 2-3, but there is a small area which gets steep and in a grove of tree's which is tight but nothing thats not manageable.. Went with our friends that have a big 4 door Land Rover Defender and were able to navigate with no problems. If you have a big Ford f250/F350 with a long bed, you won't make it. Good groves with some fall colors right now. There are several other roads that run off of the main road. However some don't go through anymore. Most notably the Trail that runs in a northeasterly direction marked 31053C (off the northern loop entrance area). It gets steep and rutty quick and than just abruptly ends a quarter of the way up and tight to turn around on. Good views of Hope Valley as you come around onto the southern portion of the trail and it gets steep going down, again on the southern portion, take it slow and you won't have any issues. Ran into about 4 other groups on a Sunday Afternoon.

Went in a 2016 WK2 with 2 OME inch lift, west side of the loop was very easy but some narrow sections, any stock 4x4 should make it. East side of the loop has several very steep and very narrow and tight turns, one spot I had to do a 2 point turn to fit between 2 trees that many people have clearly hit, it was on and off raining with some light muddy sections, the steep spots I only had a few minor slips while climbing but no issues getting up.

One patch of snow approaching the summit. This trail could be done by a 2 wheel drive with a traction device

Deep snow is obstructing the trail immediately after the hill climb on the easternmost side of the loop. Might be passable for a single track

Really fun trial! Definitely a 4/10 difficulty, I wasn’t able to complete it because of the very last stretch of uphill. My RWD couldn’t do it and I didn’t wanna push it to hard. The rest of the trail was easy, but very bumpy and tight. My truck is all scraped up now.

Pickett Peak is a fun intermediate trail. A 4x4 with a 2” lift will help clear some small boulders. I would recommend airing down due to the trail being mostly rocky. There is one pretty steep rocky hill where I engaged the rear lockers due to the loose rocks. Also be willing to accept a few minor pinstripes as there are some narrow areas of overgrown brush and trees.

Deep snow drift after hill climb. Don’t do the hill climb as it is sketchy turning around at the top

A deep snow drift still remains at 8600 ft elevation. Might be able to winch through it since trees were plentiful but we didn't bother.
