Trail Overview
Ney Springs - FS 39N34 offers a beautiful, winding climb up from Castle Lake Road directly into the lush, towering evergreens of the Shasta National Forest, eventually reaching an elevation of over 4,300 feet. The overall environment is a dense, shaded alpine forest that occasionally opens up to reveal scattered clearings and breathtaking distant views of the snow-capped mountain peaks. Starting off as a relatively dusty and loose dirt track, you will quickly spot several inviting, primitive campsites nestled off to your left during the early stretches of the drive. As you continue roughly a mile in, you will eventually begin the descent toward the connection with Old Homestead Road. Farther down the trail, the trees start to close in, creating a series of narrow, blind corners that demand a careful line selection. Fortunately, while the road can feel tight in the heavily wooded sections, there are spots where you could carefully turn around in the event of an emergency. The route ultimately concludes at a spacious dirt intersection, providing plenty of room to stretch your legs, take a break, and easily turn around.
Difficulty
Earning a moderate Grade 3 difficulty rating, the trail surface begins as soft, dusty dirt but quickly transforms into a rougher, rockier track heavily marked by deep water runoff ruts. The primary obstacles on this route are the numerous, prominent rain ruts encountered during the downhill sections, including large parallel trenches that will require deliberate and careful tire placement to skirt around without scraping your undercarriage. In addition to the water damage, you will need to navigate through tight, rocky turns where the forest canopy and scattered fallen branches encroach right to the edge of the path. Take these rougher, heavily rutted sections at a very slow, creeping pace to ensure you maintain traction and safely clear the uneven, shifting ground.
