Trail Overview
This is the main access road into the Los Padres National Forest on the southwest side of the Frazier Mountain area. It leads to several other OHV trails and hiking trailheads, but eventually dead ends at a locked gate. From the north end, it begins as a winding paved road for the first 1.5 miles before becoming a graded dirt road accessible to OHVs for the rest of the route. Near the halfway point, the trail transitions down a high, narrow shelf road with multiple switchbacks to the valley below. Some great scenic views of the area are possible from this vantage point. After crossing the valley, the trail will then follow and cross Piru Creek several times. Depending on the time of year, the creek could be up to a foot or more deep. The water crossings have packed rock foundations, though, and should provide good traction even when the water is high. There are occasional shallow ruts and small embedded rocks on the trail, so vehicles with at least a moderate level of clearance are recommended. The trail is closed annually from 11/2 to 4/30. A green/red sticker permit is required for OHV use as well as a Day Use pass payable to the Los Padres National Forest. Limited to no cellular service along the trail. Tread Lightly and Pack-It-Out.
Difficulty
This forest road consists of sections of pavement and graded dirt. Both are generally at least one vehicle wide with room to pull to the side to allow other vehicles to pass. In unpaved stretches, there may be shallow ruts and smaller embedded and loose rocks. There is one steep, winding, and narrow section where the trail becomes a shelf road. Several shallow water crossings are present in the second half of the trail as it follows Piru Creek. Vehicles with moderate clearance and only 2WD should be able to complete the entire route unless rain or light snow creates slick conditions.
