Trail Overview

This is the new Lockwood Creek Trail. The reason it's called "new" is that this trail used to follow Lockwood Creek, and the Forest Service has closed that part of the trail and combined it with what used to be the first part of Miller Jeep Trail. Why the Forest Service did things this way is unknown, other than they wanted to stop people from driving in the creek so much. Lockwood Creek Trail now officially ends near Piru Creek, and at that point, Miller Jeep Trail now starts. Lockwood Creek trail winds through the Los Padres National Forest near Hungry Valley State OHV Park. There are great views as you top some of the rocky hill climbs. There are also some nice Little Rock gardens to play in and, of course, you cross over Lockwood Creek. The point where you cross over Lockwood Creek used to be the turn into the creek which you then followed for a while before rejoining the current trail. That's what's now closed, so the trail winds up a little hill instead and continues until it ends at the beginning of Miller Jeep Trail, near a campground where there is some nice shade. It's a great place to take a break for lunch, just rest up, and get yourself mentally prepared for the challenges to come should you choose to head up Alamo Mountain on Miller Jeep Trail.

Difficulty

This trail has numerous moderate hill climbs that have loose dirt and rocks. These are easily traversed in a 4x4 with high ground clearance and at least 33-inch tires. It also has some small rock gardens that again should pose no problem with high-clearance 4x4s.

History

As noted in the description, the Forest Service has combined this trail and what used to be the first part of Miller Jeep Trail into a single trail they call Lockwood Creek Trail.

You can drive Miller Jeep trail to Alamo mountain, however, the exit through Hungry Valley SVRA that completes the loop is locked. There is no access through the park on Gold Hill Road, so plan accordingly to loop back on Miller Jeep or go somewhere else unfortunately.

Lot of steep climbs, switchbacks, and off-camber moments. Take your time and watch your tire placement. High likelihood of pinstriping, but it's safer than risking rolling off the edge. Rear lockers will provide peace of mind.
