Trail Overview

Set along an elevated mountain spine in a mixed pine and chaparral environment recovering from the 2018 Ranch Fire within the Mendocino National Forest, Hornet's Nest Ridge - FS 17N05 delivers a scenic and engaging off-road excursion. Accessed directly off of Forest Highway M5, this 2.4-mile single-lane dirt connector path travels across high-country ridgelines before terminating at an active multi-trail intersection that provides throughout deeper into the forest network. Outdoor recreationists and off-roaders frequently utilize this route to reach established OHV staging points, access interconnected ridge trails, or take in panoramic vistas overlooking the eastern valley floor. The driving surface consists of a wide, single-track dirt road with embedded stones and rolling terrain bumps. Departing the M5, the route passes a broad staging area with multiple OHV trail access points at 0.4 miles, followed by a cozy primitive campsite at 0.9 miles. After taking in expansive valley views near 1.5 miles, the track tilts downward at 1.9 miles into a series of short, steep, bumpy descents before concluding at the 2.4-mile junction with Smelt Ridge and Hornet Nest Grove.

Difficulty

This single-lane ridge route presents continuous terrain bumps, embedded rocks, and steep, sudden elevation changes. Primary obstacles include a series of short, steep downhill pitches beginning near the 1.9-mile mark that feature loose dirt, shallow ruts, and step-like earthen bumps. To traverse these obstacles safely without scraping lower vehicle components, maintain a slow, controlled crawling speed, select high lines over protruding rocks and dips, and use smooth, steady braking on steep declines.
