Trail Overview
Set within the Stonyford OHV Recreation Area along chaparral-covered ridges recovering from past wildfire impacts in the Mendocino National Forest, Cracker - FS 17N76 provides a secluded and visually captivating mountain ridge trip. Accessed directly off of Cracker Box Trail near a major OHV trail access point, this narrow single-lane dirt spur extends out along an elevated spine before terminating at a sweeping loop turnaround. Off-road enthusiasts and sightseers primarily venture along this route to enjoy panoramic mountain views, access surrounding OHV trail networks, or secure quiet, high-country primitive campsites. The driving surface consists of a single-track dirt path peppered with mild surface ruts, light bumps, and pine needle debris. The trail meanders gracefully along the ridge line, where overgrown chaparral and tall brush closely border the track to create persistent pinstriping hazards. About one mile into the journey, the landscape opens dramatically to showcase stunning vistas of the surrounding mountain ranges before culminating at a spacious end-point loop.
Difficulty
This single-lane dirt spur presents a straightforward driving surface peppered with shallow erosion ruts and minor terrain bumps. Technical rock crawling and deep high-centering hazards are absent, allowing vehicles to proceed smoothly by maintaining steady momentum and remaining centered on the established track. The primary challenge along the route is significant vegetation encroachment from tall chaparral bushes, which will brush against vehicle sides and create paint pinstriping throughout the drive. Drivers should travel at a cautious speed, scan ahead for the few available pullout spots, and utilize the wide loop at the 1.8-mile terminus to execute a seamless turnaround.
