Trail Overview

Branching off Forest Road 7N50, Forest Service Road 7N65 is a quiet out-and-back woodland spur located within the Stanislaus National Forest. The corridor meanders downhill beneath a dense, towering canopy of white firs, ponderosa pines, and flourishing mountain shrubs. Composed of a single-lane roadbed that alternates between firm packed earth, loose gravel, and light rocky stretches, the trail holds an approachable difficulty rating of 2. Forest visitors and campers primarily travel this secluded route to enjoy tranquil timber scenery and access a private, sheltered dispersed campsite tucked into a quiet woodland clearing. While past trail work has cut narrow vehicle portals through massive fallen logs, the drivable route terminates just beyond the 7N65C junction, where an extensive accumulation of downed timber completely bars further motorized travel.

Difficulty

Rated 2 out of 10, this route involves an easy downhill trek over a natural dirt and loose stone surface. Drivers will encounter occasional shallow ruts, minor cross-dips, and sections where encroaching roadside foliage makes light contact with vehicle sides. The trail threads through several tight gaps cut between large downed tree trunks, requiring attentive wheel placement to stay centered in the lane. Maintaining a moderate speed and utilizing the campsite clearing or the 7N65C intersection to execute a turnaround before reaching the impassable log barricade ensures a smooth, stress-free trip.
