Trail Overview
Forest Service 3N90 winds deep into the timbered backcountry of the Stanislaus National Forest, serving as a scenic out-and-back spur through active forest management country. The track rolls beneath a towering canopy of ponderosa pines, incense cedars, and firs, flanked by thick green underbrush on the hillsides. This is a logging area, so expect forestry equipment. This trail is popular with recreationists scouting private dispersed camping spots and visiting the informal target shooting area at the trail's end. The route meanders past thinned timber stands and small side pulls before ending at an expansive, cleared dirt landing framed by log barriers that provides sweeping sky views and ample space to set up camp or stage equipment.
Difficulty
Rated a 1, FS 3N90 is a forgiving, well-maintained mountain route built on a firm base of hard-packed red dirt, crushed gravel, and pine needle duff. Minor surface undulations, shallow water ripples, and light center rutting appear along the rolling grades, but staying centered easily keeps tires riding high on smooth ground. The roadway provides generous passing width through most of the timber corridor and finishes at a massive, flat dirt turnaround where navigating larger setups is completely trouble-free.
