Trail Overview
Elliot Creek Road - FS 1040000 opens high in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest and spends most of its length dropping steadily toward the Applegate River, with only a little climbing along the way. The first couple of miles are the roughest, with a loose, rocky surface running beneath rocky cutbanks and mixed conifer forest. As the road loses elevation, the tread smooths out into wide, hard-packed gravel. Near the bottom, it meets the river and winds along the water through a series of curves and blind turns, where oncoming traffic can appear with little warning. A single seasonal creek crossing breaks up the route: a short rocky stretch with a few small boulders that takes some care to pick through, and a couple of bridges carry the road across the water. Numerous pullouts and campgrounds along the road make this a popular main route through the area. Best driven from summer through fall.
Difficulty
Rated 2. For most of its length, this is a wide, maintained gravel road with a gentle downhill grade toward the Applegate River. What lifts it above a 1 is the loose, rocky surface across the upper couple of miles, the seasonal creek crossing, where a short rocky section with small boulders calls for careful line choice, and the blind turns along the river that demand attention for oncoming traffic. It stays at a 2 because there are no steep grades, ledges, or sustained technical sections, and the lower miles are smooth and hard-packed.
