Winding through a picturesque subalpine pine forest within the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, District Line Road - FS 31204 offers a quiet and scenic high-country mountain escape. Beginning directly at the terminus of Sunset Lakes Road - FS 31097, this peaceful route is primarily utilized by outdoor enthusiasts seeking out lakeside dispersed camping, scenic shore fishing, and serene water views. As the track meanders past Upper Sunset Lake, it provides an inviting drive through towering evergreens before dropping down to terminate at Lower Sunset Lake. Near the end of the journey, the road leads directly to two rustic, shoreline campsites revealed as seasonal water levels recede. The first clearing is wide and spacious with a convenient turnaround area, while the smaller second site sits just beyond, requiring a short drive across the sandy beach.

Earning a Grade 2 difficulty rating, this is a narrow, hard-packed dirt and rock route that becomes noticeably steeper and rougher as you approach the water. While the upper section remains relatively smooth and flat, the final descent down to Lower Sunset Lake requires navigating over larger embedded rocks, exposed cobbles, and mild erosion channels. Drivers should slow down, pick clean lines around protruding rocks to protect lower vehicle components, and maintain steady momentum without spinning tires on the soft, muddy sand along the beach campsites.
