Trail Overview

Diablo Dropoff is a 2.3-mile point-to-point trail rated 3 out of 10 located within the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. In the middle of the Deep of the Carrizo Badlands portion of the ABDSP lies the Diablo Dropoff trail. The trail is well known to local offroad riders and has been well-documented in various videos. The trail should be run west to east per the state park map as it is designated a one-way trail. Signs have been placed at the bottom of the dropoff repeatedly but always seem to be removed by riders. The trail can be divided into four sections. The trail starts at the intersection with Arroyo Seco Del Diablo and crosses the flattop mesa along a well-used sand track for 1.3 miles. The second and third sections are the actual dropoff which starts with a steep drop, followed by a short plateau and a second dropoff. The park service will periodically grade the dropoff when the erosion gets too bad. Then over time, the weather will take its toll and the trail will erode with crosscuts and deep sand. The last section of the wash tends to be narrow and rocky leading out to the end where it spills into Fish Creek Wash. The top of the dropoff provides a view of the Fish Creek area and the Vallecito Mountains. All canyons and washes in the area are subject to flash floods. Travelers should watch the weather reports for the mountains to the west. There is no cell phone service within the canyon. The nearest services are located in Borrego Springs to the northwest and Salton City to the northeast. Offroad travel within the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is restricted to street-legal vehicles only.

Difficulty

The trail consists of loose rocks, dirt, and sand with some slick rock surfaces and mud holes possible. No steps are higher than 12 inches. 4WD may be required, and aggressive tires are a plus.

History

The name Arroyo Seco del Diablo means the Devil's Dry Wash and is located in the Carrizo Badlands. It formed from water flowing from the ancient Colorado River cutting through the sandstone and rock concretions as the water made its way to the Gulf of California. (Concretions are cemented bodies of sediment particles embedded into rock or sandstone, usually round or disk-shaped.) The concretions that were carried downstream helped to form the deep-sided canyon walls of Arroyo Seco del Diablo. Diablo Drop Off sits on a mesa (Spanish for table) above the paths carved by the massive floodwaters millions of years ago.

Pretty easy but fun little trail. The "drop off" isnt anything cray most rigs can do most the lines. One line is pretty rutted and torn up. You have plenty of room at the top and bottom to turn around and go up/down another line.

Diablo dropoff has 2 sections with drops. The first is more rusted at the bottom than it was on my last review on Feb1. There is a hole developing at the bottom of the main line down the drop. What was a pretty easy line with no guide needed is a bit more difficult for my vehicle but still passable. Second drop is largely the same condition as before, its steeper and looser but the base seems to be on hard rock so it doesnt break down as easily. You can straddle the big holes on either side and make it down fine

Great day on the trail. We came from Vallecito Creek. Drop off is in good shape. Far right line down is just fine. Only a few people out.

Great trail!!! I went up, rather than down. Jeep in 4lo, rear lockers, sway bar disconnected - has no issues climbing up and over. Some of the canyons are narrow, but most Vehicles will fit.

Going down, what you see from the top is pretty easy. My ABS was kicking in and I was in 3 wheels a few times but nothing bad or worrying. What I didnt know was the second drop out of sight from the first. This one doesn't have alternate lines, is steep, and some pretty large ruts. I was able to put my driver wheels all the way on the left and straddle the ruts. Not difficult but a slip or bad line would have been very bad for me. The obstacles between the drops and fish creek did require some clearence. My buddy in a stock subaru had some issues here. I have a small lift on my CX50 and that was enough for it not to be a problem (I have about 10in clearence at the lowest point, 12in on average). Overall really fun trail, it was a bit much for a stock AWD SUV but doable. Definitely more difficult than the other 3 rated trails in the Fish creek area by a good margin.

I did it north to south which means it’s more of a Diablo climb, the actual obstacle itself it fine, theres 5 line choices, far left is sandy, the middle 3 are your most likely lines, and far right is really steep and sandy, one of the middle ones is easy enough to get a Nissan Sentra up, however north of the dropoff is a relatively skinny, and surprisingly difficult section arguably harder than the dropoff, if you’re going down, a stock 4x4 or even a 2wd SUV with some clearence will be fine with aired down tires and decent line choice, going up was actually pretty tricky, good line choice is your friend, maybe a spotter if you’ve got one but I wouldn’t bet money against a skilled driver in a stock 4x4 getting up there without too much issue.

first time on the drop off. pretty cool. The first sections of the drop off was in good shape and not rutted. The second part was a little bit slippery (sand on stone) with a mild rut in the middle that needed to be straddled. was fine and my stock Tacoma.

The drop off itself is still quite easy and not yet rutted following the recent grading others have talked about. The lower part gets pretty narrow and a little rocky at times, but still easy for a stock 4x4.

22' Colorado ZR2 Bison with 2"suspension lift on stock 30" Duracraps. Tight rocky route on the north side entrance with some baby heads but opens up a bit. Could be tight for full-size rigs but doable. Sandy wash areas and a few off camber hill climbs with multiple routes to take if you like a challenge but once up top it opens up into a flowy ocotillo forest.

Was out in mid November when they graded the main route at the drop off. Watched the mini dozer plow down all the pot holes. Ran back into the dozer heading out towards Fish Creek.

There are two paths down Diablo drop off. The one in the middle or right side if you’re going down was practically graded and pretty smooth. I went down the left side since it had a few more ruts and it was still easy in a stock Tacoma 4wd.

made it through the drop off in a stock vehicle so it is possible, but I needed a spotter.

Drop off routes are getting severely dug out due to vehicles trying to climb hill in violation of one-way trail direction.
