Trail Overview

The road is currently closed approximately 1.3 miles from Kennedy Meadows Road due to a major washout. Travel beyond the closure is not possible at this time. Chimney Basin Road provides access to the rugged backcountry surrounding the Chimney Peak Recreation Area and offers excellent views of the southern Sierra Nevada foothills, granite outcrops, and high-desert landscapes. The route begins off Kennedy Meadows Road and climbs gradually through open terrain dotted with sagebrush, pinyon pine, and scattered rock formations. The currently accessible section is a well-maintained sandy dirt road that is suitable for most high-clearance vehicles in dry conditions. The drive offers expansive views across the surrounding valleys and serves as a quiet alternative to some of the more heavily traveled routes in the area.
