Trail Overview

This 1.5 vehicle-wide soft sand route enjoys seasonal grading that helps during maintenance periods. Following the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power Aqueduct while running parallel to Highway 395 in the foothills of the Eastern Sierra Mountains, the trail encounters water crossings that add wet elements unusual for desert routes. After large rains or in spring, lots of ruts can appear, transforming conditions significantly. When dry, however, the trail runs very dusty, kicking up fine particles that reduce visibility when following other vehicles.

Difficulty

Soft sand throughout demands four wheel drive and airing down for maintaining traction and momentum. Water crossings introduce depth uncertainty and potential for getting stuck if approached carelessly. The lots of ruts in spring or after large rains create serious challenges requiring high clearance and careful line selection. Seasonal grading helps when fresh, but conditions degrade between maintenance cycles. The very dusty nature reduces visibility and can choke air filters. Timing matters here, with post-maintenance and dry conditions being ideal.
